Belfast: C16 Ollscoill na Banriona, 2007. Adult learners constitute a small but significant sector of Scotland's Gaelic population. In recent years there have been some important studies which have focused upon their numbers, needs and identities. These have included: Janis Pringle's 1985 study of evening classes, for CLI; the Provision for Gaelic Learners report of 1992 (Feumalachdan Luchd-Ionnsachaidh); John Galloway's study of adult learners of 1995: and a further study by MacNeil and MacDonald for CNAG in 1997. These have all drawn attention to the distinction of 'Gaelic learner' from 'native speaker', the ubiquity of the adult evening class, the status of the 'perpetual learner', the very few who have ever made it to full fluency by these means, and estimates of total numbers around 8,000. Even this may be a little optimistic, judged by the Census' 'learner estimates' of 7,000 readers / writers of Gaelic in the 2001 census.
